A webinar on cultural responsiveness and Autism

Cultural responsiveness and neuro-affirming practice are both named as core competencies for Psychologists. This webinar aims to take a closer look at what that means.

Many people interpret culture as non-Western, but the truth is, that all of us have a culture. All of us have different ways of doing and socialising and celebrating that is embedded in culture. Culturally responsive frameworks aim to look at people in their humanity and full selves, and bring that to the forefront of supporting clients.

In this webinar, we will:

Unpack the core tenets of cultural responsiveness, so it becomes not just a checklist, but part of reflexive practice that moves with you and the client.

Examine cultural humility, what that means, how it’s an effective tool for clinicians and why it is ever evolving.

Different factors that go into how we see and support disability, covering in-group nuances

The frameworks we were trained in, and illuminating their inherent assumptions

Along the way, these frameworks will be embedded in reflective practice, so you get to learn and apply it to yourself, and emerge a more thoughtful clinician to understand how these ideas show up.

What we’ll cover:

  • The theory and research underpinning cultural responsiveness as a clinical competency
  • Where dominant narratives can clash with, or need translating for, CALD understandings of difference, disability, and family
  • Reflective practice tools to use
  • Practical strategies for the clinic room: language, framing, questions in assessments, and what to watch for in your own blind spots

What we won’t cover:

  • Every single CALD group difference – because it’s not about boxes and lumping everyone together. It’s about frameworks that shift and challenge dominant ideas and norms towards a more cohesive understanding of our humanity.
